MORE ABOUT COOKIES

What is a cookie?

Cookies are small text files, given ID tags that are stored on your computer’s browser directory or program data subfolders. Cookies are created when you use your browser to visit a website that uses cookies to keep track of your movements within the site, help you resume where you left off, remember your registered login, theme selection, preferences, and other customization functions.

The website stores a corresponding file (with the same ID tag) to the one they set in your browser and in this file they can track and keep information on your movements within the site and any information you may have voluntarily given while visiting the website, such as e-mail address, for example.

They are often indispensable for websites that have huge databases, need logins, have customizable themes, and other advanced features and usually don’t contain much information except for the url of the website that created the cookie, the duration of the cookie’s abilities and effects, and a random number. Due to the little amount of information a cookie contains, it usually cannot be used to reveal your identity or personally-identifying information.

What are the different types of web cookies?

First party cookies: cookies set by the website the user is visiting. Only that website can read them.

Third party cookies: In addition, a website might potentially use external services, which also set their own cookies, known as third party.

Persistent cookies: cookies saved on a user’s computer that are not deleted automatically when he quits his browser.

Session cookies: cookies deleted when the user quits his browser.

Strictly necessary cookies: These cookies are essential to browse the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the site. These cookies will generally be first party session cookies.

Preferences cookies: Also referred to as “functionality cookies”, these cookies allow a website to remember choices the user has made in the past, like language, user name and password so the user can automatically log in.

Statistics cookies: Also known as “performance cookies”, these cookies collect information about how the user uses a website, like which pages he visited and which links he clicked on. None of this information can be used to identify him. It is all aggregated and, therefore, anonymized. Their sole purpose is to improve website functions. This includes cookies from third party analytics services as long as the cookies are for the exclusive use of the owner of the website visited.

Marketing cookies: These cookies track user’s online activity to help advertisers deliver more relevant advertising or to limit how many times the user sees an ad. These cookies can share that information with other organizations or advertisers. These are persistent cookies and almost always of third party provenance.
